I may have mentioned that the Kindle edition of my debut novel, The Exercise Of Vital Powers, was released without fanfare a few days ago, and can be purchased now from Amazon’s Kindle Store. I may or not have mentioned I am currently preparing a paperback edition for publication later this summer, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for a slightly more high profile release, in terms of marketing. So now that I have the first book under my belt, I’ve been thinking about my writing goals for the remainder of the year. My ruminations have led me to start tentatively outlining two future novels. At the moment I am undecided about which of the two I want to prioritise, so I will work on them concurrently until I make up my mind.
The first story is actually a follow up to The Exercise Of Vital Powers, despite the fact I wrote my debut fully intending for it to be a stand-alone novel. However, on account of the extensive world building that went into writing it (much of it unused), part of me feels as though it would be a waste not to step back into that world to tell another tale. But more importantly than that, I have to admit I’ve developed a bit of an attachment to the two lead characters, and I would enjoy writing them again.
The second story is based on an idea I’ve had for a while, and though I initially conceived it to be an urban fantasy, I feel that I can do something considerably more original with the idea if I make it a high fantasy tale instead. I think it will for a much darker story than The Exercise Of Vital Powers, not just in terms of the plot but more so in tone.
While it’s certainly the case that I’m more inclined to prioritising the second story, my decision will probably be decided by the reaction to The Exercise Of Vital Powers over the coming weeks and months. If readers respond favourably to it, and I get the sense that a follow up book would be welcome, I will focus my efforts on a sequel. Which ever way I end up going, I hope to have an unedited “final” draft completed by the end of October.
So, that’s my plan for the rest of 2017. What about you? If you are an author or aspiring to become one, what are your writing plans for this year.
